BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association)
Background
Based in Ubud and founded in 2004 by Ms Janice Girardi, an American
born Expatriate who has lived in Bali for 30 years.
She has a jewellery manufacturing business with over 200 employees.
BAWA is a not-for-profit charity registered in Indonesia.
Its goal is to improve animal welfare in Bali by reducing stray/street
dog numbers and reducing animal suffering through humane sterilization
programs, through rescue work and education programs in schools.

The clinic and base for the desexing and emergency vans
|
- A School education program staffed by 2 Full time Vets that encompasses almost 100 schools in the Western half of Bali
- A 24 hour emergency van staffed by 1 Vet and 1 Nurse that services a major part of Bali
- Average 14 calls over 24 hours, incluing cats, dog, monkeys and wildlife
- A 24 hour clinic staffed by 2 vets and 2 Vet nurses that rescues, treats and
rehomes stray kittens and puppies that cannot fend for themselves on the street
- Average 40 pups and 4 kitten in the clinic
- Management of a Desexing van that travels to remote and poor villages in the west side of Bali
- The van is staffed by 2 Vets and 2 vet nurse/dogcatchers
- This van is funded by The Bali street Fund Australia(BSDF) a small group of
volunteers(Headed by Ms Sue Warren ,Melbourne, Dr Kathy Daly, Melbourne Vet
and Ms Paula Hodgson, Sydney who regularly travel to Bali and who raise
funds within Australia for this project alone
- Average 20-40 desexings per day and 20 consultations with villagers pets

Make trips to Bali twice a year to provide on going training and support
Nurse Robyn Ireland has been there to assist with training
Nurses Robyn Ireland and Mrs Ann Letch ( Box Hill VC) and Ms Cheryl
Pollock ( of Eltham Central Vet hospital) assist Bali street dog fund through
the year to raise funds to pay for the Desexing Mobile Van

The emergency vans respond to calls from all over Bali and euthanazes dogs that have been hit by vehicles

Training
Vets taught to treat skin cases properly ,including good diagnostic
procedures such as performing and reading skin and ear cytology
Management and diagnosis of all the common ear and skin diseases
Mangement and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases
Assessing and doing prognostic scoring for trauma cases
Treatment of common emergencies that are presented
Creation of Hospital charts
Continued training of the Vets in desexing van to improve skills ,
improve follow up of cases( 24 hour phone contact for post op care)
Mentoring the Vets and Ms Girardi in the area of
Policy making and writing of rosters,management of staff and
writing of Veterinary and nursing protocols **
Asisting the Vets on Line with medical and surgical
management of specific cases recruiting, interviewing and sreening and
mentoring of volunteers that write in to the BAWA website or BSDF website
Plan to train the Vets to do juvenile desexing
Designing and assisting in the renovation and building of a new clinic
The new facility will enable the staff to have 3 high standard quarantine
rooms, an isolation ward, healthy pens and a catward
The new facility will allow separation of the healthy animals from the
quarantined animals as well as a separate room for doing private consultations

Protocols
Asisted in the writing of protocols and policies
Writing of protocols for neo nate care, creating of balanced diets for
the pups and kittens that are rescued
Currently setting up of a database to record all information about puppies
and kittens that are rescued re geography,location, socio -economic divide
and track down problem areas in Bali
If BAWA may be able to identify problem areas and redirect and refocus
the desexing vam education van in certain areas
Adopted pups to be followed up to see if the education prgam
has been successful on terms of animal care and welfare

BackGround
Founded by Dr Listriani Wistawan a Local Balinese Veterinarian
who is the instigator of the first ever stray cat and dog desexing program in Bali
She is a very respected Vet in Bali and she introduced the animal welfare syllabus in all the universities
She also conducts humane slaughter programs in the whole of Indonesia
Dr Elaine Ong and Dr Chris Barton have assisted Yudisthira since 2003
Involved in training the Vets to improved surgical and medical skills ,Chris inititated
converted speying technique from midline to flanks , as well as training in takingand reading radiographs
Chris and Elaine sponsored head veterinary nurse Mr Nana Prayoga for a month's training in Melbourne
Yudisthira has been downsized due to lack of funding
It used to have 2 desexing vans and a referral clinic offering pathology and radiology services
Currently IFAW fully funds a Desexing Van that operates in the streets in the East side of Bali
It works in coorperation with BAWA and services the east side of Bali whereas BAWA services the western half of Bali
A major donor, Vbirna and Prue Gillies have donated $10,000 PA since 2006
through Vets Beyond Borders , earmarking the project for a training Program for vets,
dogcatchers and nurses in Sumatra and also a cat desexing program in Lombok
Currently Dr Listriania Wistawan founder of Yudisthira is negotiating with the
Sumatran Government for a program to train Vets in Sumatra to manage a long term, humane
and efficient ABC-AR program
Dr Listriani is lobbying to enact the first ever animal cruelty laws in Indonesia
Currently ,no one can be prosecuted for animal cruelty
