Routine Blood Health Screen

A candidate for a routine blood test

After the examination of your pet at their annual health check and vaccination, we may suggest a routine blood screen to check their internal organ function. The risk of organ disease and failure increases with age, and early diagnosis is essential to help prevent further deterioration of the condition.

In a routine blood screen, we look for changes in liver and kidney function, blood proteins and glucose, and the proportion of red blood cells to the total blood volume. We also analyse your pet's electrolytes - sodium, potassium and chloride ions - as these can also be indicators of disease.

Naturally, if we find indications of organ dysfunction, we will discuss these findings with you, and recommend an appropriate course of action - further tests, medication or dietary changes. We would also make recommendations for subsequent rechecks to ensure that your pet is getting the greatest benefit from the treatment regime.
