DVVH - An Historical Perspective And Practice Profile
The Diamond Valley Veterinary
Hospitals group, incorporating the Eltham Central Veterinary Hospital
and the Montmorency Veterinary Hospital, began in 1979 when Dr Chris
Barton established the Research Veterinary Clinic formerly located in
Ingrams Road Research. In 1981, the Practice took its first steps in
expanding into the Diamond Valley community by setting up a small
branch facility in Montmorency. The original Montmorency Veterinary
Clinic was then relocated in 1996 to our current well-established and
purpose-developed hospital site in Sherbourne Road Montmorency. In
December 2001, the Research Veterinary Hospital was relocated to our
current purpose built Eltham Central Veterinary Hospital site in Main
Road Eltham. Dr Joseph Galbally joined Dr Chris Barton as a partner
in the Practice in 1992. Today, our Practice employs around thirty
staff members, many more than the original two staff members back in
1979.

The expansion of our Practice
over the past twenty years has been in line with our philosophy of
providing first class modern veterinary hospital facilities to the
Diamond Valley community. Each of our hospitals provide a standard of
care established by the Australian Small Animal Veterinary
Association (ASAVA) veterinary hospitals accreditation committee
which currently sets one of the highest accredited standards for
veterinary hospitals in the world. Our Eltham Central Veterinary
Hospital achieved ASAVA hospital accreditation in August 2002. It is
now one of only thirteen ASAVA accredited hospitals in Victoria.
Currently, the Montmorency Veterinary Hospital is gearing towards
ASAVA accreditation. Having ASAVA hospital standards accreditation
means that our hospitals are resourced to provide a quality of
excellence and veterinary care equally matched to one of the highest
standards in the world. Providing this standard of hospital
facilities and achieving this high standard of veterinary care is
extremely important to all of us at Eltham Central and Montmorency
Veterinary Hospitals. It means that we can take great pride in
providing our clients and patients with the best service
possible.
Both of our hospitals in Eltham
and Montmorency provide the best in modern facilities and equipment
including ultra-modern diagnostic equipment, first class X-ray
facilities, computerised pathology laboratories, state of the art
dental equipment, large fully equipped surgical suites with state of
the art anaesthetic monitoring equipment, modern in-patient hospital
facilities etc. Each hospital site is fully independent of each other
providing the equivalent range and standard of veterinary care. Our
veterinary and nursing staff are trained in a range of small
companion animal disciplines, and we are resourced and equipped to
treat a range of companion animal species including dogs, cats,
rabbits, guinea pigs, cage and aviary birds etc. For over twenty
years now, with the generous efforts of a network of local wildlife
carers, we have also been committed to the pro bono treatment of our
local wildlife.
As well as providing veterinary
services to the Diamond Valley and further abroad Melbourne
metropolitan communities, we also link in with the major Australian
Universities to provide an extension of their extra mural training
for undergraduate veterinary science students, our future generation
of veterinarians. Drs Chris Barton and Joseph Galbally are currently
Senior Fellows and Academic Associates of the University of Melbourne
Faculty of Veterinary Science. An integral part of our philosophy at
the Diamond Valley Veterinary Hospitals has always been to continue
to educate all of our veterinary and nursing staff with all the up to
date and modern developments in veterinary medicine and surgery. As
an extension of this philosophy we aim to provide the facilities and
mode of practice to help supplement the training of future
veterinarians and veterinary nurses.
Overall, the history and future
development of our Practice is about continuing to provide the best
in modern veterinary care, continuing to update our facilities and
equipment, continuing to educate our staff and future generations of
veterinary practitioners and nurses, and continuing to keep on track
with providing and maintaining the traditional values of a caring
community service.
